A Good Yoga Instructor Should Ask The Right Question At The Right Time

December 5th, 2008 · 1 Comment ·

I had a casual chat with my friend few days ago. She has gone for Yoga classes for the past number of months. She complaint about a not so pleasant experience in one of the classes with a new yoga instructor. Probing further, “So, your previous yoga teacher is much better and in what sense?”

According to her, a good instructor will know the right timing to ask the right question.

Imagine a teacher asking students, “So, who can’t do this?” No doubt, the intention is good. The instructor wants to know to whom she would pay attention to and what pace the classes needed to be conducted. However, not everyone can take this openly. Some prefer questions to be asked in private.

Now, here is the challenge. Unless the session is conducted in one-to-one situation, it is indeed hard to please everyone. Both student and the Yoga instructor will need to play the part.

For the student, if you do not want to disclose certain limitation, be it physical disability or some other limitation, ask your the instructor. Alternatively, arrive earlier before the class starts. Tell your instructor about your health condition or some other concern. You could also wait after class to talk to her. To be on the safer side, if you find it hard in the class, simply stop and don’t force yourself into difficult poses.

As for the instructor, according to my friend, some are smart to ask questions when students’ head is down. The instructors will then ask anyone wants to let them know something to lift their heads and make eye contact so the instructor can walk over to them. Not bad. This approach maintains a little more privacy for the students. Also, the instructor should remember the students’ condition. You don’t want the student keep telling you their health condition.

Big amount of yoga instructors are losing their job. Because Malaysian Muslims are forbidden to practice yoga. So the yoga instructors must be very good to remain their job.
