I thought all the shots up until playboy and FHM were really nice and up until then, I did not agree with the woman who said “she is either naive or a fool”.
But yeah, those playboy shots: she just looks like a f**k puppet. Sorry. She is, indeed, a fool. She didnt have to go there and she could still have made the money she so obviously craves.

At no point did ibster mention “yea she achieved alot. I admire her” no it’s all about looking about sexualising. Which takes away from the issue of what she’s done! Unfortunately smart women do understand that the market is run by men. But it’s just sad for ever other girl out there to think “the only way i’m gonna make it is to get naked”

Tami, and all the other women who posted on here – as much as I’d like to agree with your points of view, the simple fact is men have throughout human history have ALWAYS sexualized images of women (in art, sculpture etc) and ALWAYS will, the media today in my mind is just an extension of what’s been happening in the civilised (note the British spelling!) world for centuries – I’m not saying it’s fair but that’s just the way it is.
Your ranting, although well-intentioned, seems a little misguided; if women are SO powerful, intelligent, smart etc in the modern age how exactly do WE make this the only way for females to do well (and maybe you as women should try harder to enlighten those who “fall for this lie”)? If you honestly think that men are going to change millions of years of evolution for your benefit then I’m sorry to be the bearer of bad news!
There ARE obviously those female athletes who will never grace the cover of any men’s magazine but given, as the article said, swimming has a relatively low profile I think Amanda’s choice is a smart one. I look at it like this – if I had dedicated my whole life (and all the sacrifice that comes with that) to a non-mainstream chosen sport knowing I probably had a maximum of 8-12 years at the top level I’d take the “easy” way out too – she still has another 50 years to live once she retires and I think it’s only fair to be compensated as much as possible for all those years of dedication, not to mention wanting to have a stable enough financial foundation if she chose to start a family etc. Too many former athletes I know personally have fallen on hard times because they had plowed everything they had into the first 35 years of their life and found it very difficult to adapt to normality…
And to be honest, her Playboy pictures are fine – it’s not as if she’s spread-eagled or anything!

So according to you. Because it has been done for centuries I should just shut up and let people get on with it?
I don’t have a problem with someone trying to earn money. I get it, I would just like there to be other ways for women to achieve it. The main problem that I have is that it’s one step to do a playboy cover, but it can be such a downhill slide, especially for those of lesser circumstances who then think that “well if this athelete did it for money. Then I can sell myself in someway and gain money” Whether that way be more or less derogatory.
And how far back are you talking in regards to the civilised world? Greek culture was meant to be civilised and they regarded the male form as more sexual and depicted it as such. But this seems to have died out, along with many other refinements of that civilised (note the British spelling too!!!???) world. But I could be going too far back.
Also with the sexualisation of females and the saturation of it from the media that we have. Is it no wonder that rape has risen? It’s not just the images I care about it’s the message that they send. Boys are getting a warped view of what is real and what isn’t. Not only that, we are of a culture that tells young boys “why are you crying? what are you a girl?” (I’ve said this before!!!) which automatically says “girls are lesser and you can’t show emotions”this in the long run leads to difficulties and can result in the violence we see in the news papers or even on drunken nights out.
It also gives girls a warped message of self worth, “well i have to look sexy” which then leads to “well I have to give a guy whatever he wants”
example – I was out one night and there was a girl out with us in nothing but basically her underwear (heard of Jordon? Paris hilton?) She was a hot girl and men were ALL over here. One of which went to ask her back to his for a “fun time”. She said she’d think about it, to which point he got angry and called her a slut and a fat b*tch that no one would want to sleep with… except him 2 minutes ago. She was wrong to wear what she wore out but he was wrong to expect her to jump into his arms. and this is a common occurance.
OK i’m going off topic, I understand.
To cap it off. Yes men and the media will sexualise women, have done for many years. But I think we all need to learn on both sides. I am a feminist (obviously lol), but I don’t blame men for everything and I definately think women should stand up and take responsiblity for their actions. And females need to lead by example.

I’m one man, not a force of nature! Some things will never change including the need human beings have to compare each other visually to determine “status”, sexually and otherwise… I could compare it to being black, I’m fully aware racism isn’t right but I also accept it’s something which will never go away… Doesn’t stop me living and enjoying my life though! :-D
