Can I Drink Water During Meal?

November 10th, 2009 · 7 Comments ·

Some people may tell you not to drink too much water during meal. Their reason is that water may dilute the digestive juice (known as hydrochloric acid) and affect the normal digestion.

Is it true?

The truth is that water does not dilute digestive juice. The digestive juice is able to cope well with water. Only people who are having problems in making enough stomach acid need to worry about having too much water intake during meal.

One thing worth mentioned is that stomach can draw water from the rest of the body if it needs water to digest food. In fact, your food, including meat and vegetables, contains water. Therefore, drinking water with meals is a matter of preference.

The other thing is that drinking water during meal may reduce the amount of food eaten. Based on my personal experience, having a bowl of soup before main course will make the stomach to feel full and therefore eating less. This little tip may be useful for weight management.

I should say I agree with drinking the soup first before having other meal. I have a weird habit whenever I eat soup noodle, I’ll finish the vegetables and most of the soup first, the noodle then, and I end up only taking 1/3 of the noodle portion. :)

Our stomach digests food at its best at a temperature of 37 degrees celsius. If you drink cold water (11 degrees celsius), it takes 30 minutes for it to revert back to its original temperature. A ‘cold’ stomach can cultivate bad bacteria so its discouraged to drink cold water when eating.

I always drink water during my meals. Never drink cold water with my meals, as it is unhealthy. Especially when you drink it with ‘fat’ food.

Water should be consumed either before or after meal, not during meal. The best is to drink water (air suam ONLY), at least 15 minutes after meal. Drinking water during meal will generally weaken your body, in long term.

Drinking water during your meal is not only ok to do but encouraged. Where does this stuff come from?

Think about it this way… your body is over 75% water anyway.

What do you do when your chewing food and you swallow and it doesn’t go down… choke @adu5368?

    1) Drinking water during meal definitely not encouraged.

    2) Our body is over 75% water has nothing to do with how you take your meal.

    3) If you chew your meal slowly and properly, you will never…never choke. Each portion of the meal in your mouth must be chewed at least 15 to 20 times than you swallow. That is the proper way.

I have to say that I use to never imagine myself drinking water with a meal. I mean I always had to have soda. But ever since I have been using Insanity by BeachBody I have not touched any soda at all. I drink water with every meal and I feel the best I have ever felt. Plus I find that I am enjoying my food more as I am paying more attention to what I am eating vs drinking.
