In 2006 leading up to 2007, I led a very stressful lifestyle which resulted in a nervous breakdown around February 2007. This led me to rethink my habits, and I started taking my health more seriously. I was already enrolled in a gym but then I decided to take it more seriously by hiring a personal trainer. Since then, the demands of my profession have even increased, but I am able to take it all much better, thanks to my regular workout. I also find that when I work out regularly, I generally have more energy.

In summary, my primary motive for signing up for gym was not to look good or even to lose weight, but to maintain my sanity. Of course, in the process, my appearance improved a lot :)

I need to lose weight but I joined the gym to increase my health, first and foremost.

For me, it was appearance all the way for about 5 years - and towards the last 2 to 3 years, I focused on the health benefits. One simple way to enjoy and reap the benefits is to ensure we get sufficient cardiovascular exercise for a healthy heart. That’s what most people skip cos its not pleasant.

Originally I started going, as my friend needed motivation to go. She’d had the membership for a year and had been a handful of times. So I agreed to be her gym buddy. And to be fair, I probably needed it more than her. (being at the time 170cm and bordering on 100kgs!!!)
I’m of the mindset that if you are going to do it, then do it properly and soon felt myself getting into a regular cycle. Even popping in on the weekends if I had a spare hour. It’s now become a way of life more than anything. And I bore people to death talking about body combat. lol
I joke now that I go to the gym so that I can fit into pretty dresses, being of a size once where shopping was a hellish experience as the sizes were never big enough.

I don’t believe that I went to the gym to have a healthy life style. But thats what I go for now. I’m healthier, more awake and aware of my body and how it works. I cut down on un healthy foods as i know now what they do to your body not because it’s gonna make you fat. And it helps that the more you go the better you look, the better you feel, the more you work out. it’s a cycle, but it’s one of those good cycles. :)

I didn’t join a gym, I work out at home and go to the gym for some cardio on saturdays. I’m asian (brown) and most people in my family aren’t too healthy, in school I used to eat junk everyday and noticed a bit of a belly forming, so I thought of all the adults in my family and realised that every single on of them is fat, so in a wierd way that became my original motivation to lose weight. This was about 2 years ago, now I’ve lost that extra weight and am happy with my looks, I just work out to look lean, but health is still a factor as injuries have held my progress back, so a bit of both really.

I workout to stay healthy. I started working out regularly after my car accident a few years ago. I find that exercise helps manage whatever residual back problems I have. The added benefit of extra energy and feeling great is something that I am used to now. If I skip my exercise for more than 3 days, I start to get cranky.

I lift weights at gym, yes one to look good, to undo the damage done after being heavy for so long and also because of this gastric problem i have. I dont know why, but when i started lifting, i never encountered gastric problems until recently when i decided to take a long break, due to exam. Only then I realised that lifting weight indirectly destress myself, hence no gastric [i tend to get gastric when in stress, no idea why]

Believe it or not, i started going to the gym cos i was bored at uni. I was attracted to the energetic instructors after watching them doing a demo at shopping mall and loved it so much i signed up. No regrets.

A year plus now and well.. i’ve completed a few 10K runs, a marathon and doing climbing too. Joining a gym can be life changing. It’s your first step to increasing your fitness level so that you can attempt other sports and develop a passion for it. Tho of course, i’d agree with many that a spinning class after a buffet is a life saver ;p

    To Lisa Lee:
Personally for arms i’d highly recommend bench dips coupled with triceps pulldowns.

Do 3-4 sets of 15-20 pulldowns with a minute rest in between and finish off with dips. For dips, arrange two benches parallel to each other, your palms faced down on one, and your heels on the other. Do 2-3 sets of 15-20 reps.

    do this twice a week.

As for legs, spinning and squats would be more than sufficient. Toned legs and butt.. Just go easy on the resistance and weights darling cos it’s fat burn you want, not turning into that green big Hulk.

If you want to torch the fat faster, hop onto the treadmill after doing your weights.

You can do your triceps with your chest exercises and biceps with your back exercises and keep legs for another day ;)
