Honestly? Both. When I work out often I just feel better, so yes, obviously I also do it for the health benefits. But after a while, when you start noticing it pays off not only in the fact that you're less tired, but also in the looks department, appearance starts to become the main thing. And why would that be a bad thing? Sure, you'll always have people who take it to the extremes, but a healthy desire to look good, man or woman...there's nothing wrong with that.

When you fancy someone, it's because he/she has a great personality, but secretly it's also because he/she looks nice the way he/she does. Right?

I'm not a saint. I'm shallow, even. I'm 21 and I care about my looks. I don't buy the most expensive clothes, nor does my speech consist of gibberish about my weight, but I try to look as nice as possible, working with what I've been given and what I can afford. It's not the sole reason for my existence, but ingrained in my routine--like brushing my teeth is. I expect a guy to do the same. For you to care about your looks and getting those responses from your friends, I think that they're still with their head stuck in the sand. Sure, not everyone can look like Brad Pitt in Fight Club. But working with what you have and making an effort shows and a girl like me appreciates that.

I'll go as far as saying I don't really like people that don't take care of their appearance. The facilities are there--USE THEM! Being fat, there's no good excuse unless you're honestly suffering from some sort of disease or condition that leaves you with no other choice.

People that are out of shape from a young age will have that biting them in the ass later on. I'm not intent on marrying someone who stands a good chance at dropping dead at a young age because they've not been taking care of themselves.

There, now let the hate mail come in....

Believe it or not, i started going to the gym cos i was bored at uni. I was attracted to the energetic instructors after watching them doing a demo at shopping mall and loved it so much i signed up. No regrets.

A year plus now and well.. i've completed a few 10K runs, a marathon and doing climbing too. Joining a gym can be life changing. It's your first step to increasing your fitness level so that you can attempt other sports and develop a passion for it. Tho of course, i'd agree with many that a spinning class after a buffet is a life saver ;p

To Lisa Lee:
Personally for arms i'd highly recommend bench dips coupled with triceps pulldowns.

Do 3-4 sets of 15-20 pulldowns with a minute rest in between and finish off with dips. For dips, arrange two benches parallel to each other, your palms faced down on one, and your heels on the other. Do 2-3 sets of 15-20 reps.

do this twice a week.

As for legs, spinning and squats would be more than sufficient. Toned legs and butt.. Just go easy on the resistance and weights darling cos it's fat burn you want, not turning into that green big Hulk.

If you want to torch the fat faster, hop onto the treadmill after doing your weights.

You can do your triceps with your chest exercises and biceps with your back exercises and keep legs for another day ;)

For more info on exercises, check out sites online, be it Women's health. Men's health or testosterone nation even!

I lift weights at gym, yes one to look good, to undo the damage done after being heavy for so long and also because of this gastric problem i have. I dont know why, but when i started lifting, i never encountered gastric problems until recently when i decided to take a long break, due to exam. Only then I realised that lifting weight indirectly destress myself, hence no gastric [i tend to get gastric when in stress, no idea why]
