Do You Talk on Phone at the Gym?

Whenever I go, I have carry three items – car key, wallet and hand phone.  Hand phone has become a must have item in our daily lives, including the time we are at the gym.  It is a common scene in my gym to see people checking BlackBerry, replying text messages or talking on the phone. Nowadays, most phones are the music player too.  So, seeing someone bringing the phone to gym does not mean that they will talk on the phone.  May be they just use it as music player.

I bring my mobile phone with me in the gym and I do not put it in the locker.  The convenience of being able to make a call from anywhere is good, but being on the receiving makes running from my various responsibilities almost impossible.  However, I have few guidelines to get myself to follow in order not to distract others in the gym:

  1. I put my phone into silence mode.  During my lift weighting workout, if I see it vibrating, depending on situation, I may complete that particular set first before I pick up the call.  Otherwise, I leave it there.
  2. I will only pick up call which I deem important because it will distract my workout and others.  I never sit at the bench or at other equipments while talking on the phone.  I will walk away to the lobby or outside of the gym and answer that call.  I do not like hogging the equipment while spending time on the phone. I also try not to distract others.
  3. Even if I have walked out, if it is just a casual chat and not important call, I will tell the caller I am in the gym and will call when I am done.
  4. Whenever I go to Yoga classes, I will not bring the phone at all with me. I am sure other will get annoyed in the class if my phone ringing.  So, never bring your phone to Yoga classes.

I have seen people talking on the phone while walking slowly on the treadmill.  Few have to go so slow on the elliptical bike and makes me wonder they are exercising or just doing mouth exercise.  To make things worse, they do this during peak hours without knowing many people are waiting to use those machines too.

Some gyms have imposed no cell phone rule. So far, I have not come across any gym which has gone a step further by canceling membership if the rule is broken.  Not yet.  Other gyms have installed cellphone signal damper so that people will not get any line signal in the gym.  I guess these gym are probably campus or community gym which money making from the membership is not high on the priority list.  I doubt commercial gym will do that.

I know one gym prohibits mobile phone used in the locker room because of camera technology.  But, that is another story.

Normally, I spend about 45 minutes to 1 hour at gym.  I am thinking of having my phone in locker in near future while I am working out.  After all, I just want to have a good workout to release stress and that period is not that long actually.

Look as if technology has made our lives easier, but at the same time, it can be a burden. I switch off my phone when I go to bed, but I know many don’t do that.  One friend told me that he only does turn off his phone during funeral!

How about you, do you use your phones in the gym?

Don’t like to take my phone around as it is heavy but then, can’t help it as some people need to find me. :-P

Anyway, with the iPhone around, I think you’ll see more folks fiddling with their iPhone while on the treadmill or bicycle; i.e. playing around some apps like Facebook or chat…

I hate folks who chat very loudly while on the machines… uggghhh…

“I will tell the caller I am in the gym and will call when I am done.”

Seriously? Uh .. what happened to voice mail? I don’t get why people think they MUST answer their phones every single time they ring. Very very very few people are so desperately important that they cannot be out of contact for an hour. I think any time you take your phone into the gym with you and answer it while you’re working out .. you’re justifying and making excuses.

There is NO REASON that anyone cannot spend 45 minutes to an hour a day separated from their phone. If someone calls you during that hour, it will go to voice mail and you can call them when you’re finished and say “I was at the gym – what’s up?”

No! no phones at the gym, nobody had them back in the day and we still survived. if you cant spend 1 hour without your phone whilst excercising, seriously you got issues. Nothing bad is gonna happen if you dont answer your phone, i promise!!

I think that if all possible, phones should be placed away during workouts. I have to admit that if I am expecting something big or urgent, I keep my phone with me.

leave it in the locker and keep your intensity up…. the ones that use their phones in my gym have the lamest workout ethic I’ve ever seen
