Do You Wash The Banana Before You Peel Its Skin?

Yesterday when I was at my friend’s place, I saw him washing banana before peeling to eat.

I was puzzled and asked him the reason of doing so.

He told me that not only does he washes banana, he wash kiwis, mangoes, orange, apple and other fruits before he eat them. He said that many hands may have touched the fruit before it actually goes into our mouths.

No, I am not convinced. How can we touch the flesh when we are actually touching the skin.

Then, I found out how he finished his last bit of banana. He used his hand to grab the last bit of banana flesh hidden under the peel. No wonder.

I myself do not wash banana. I do wash apple, orange and water melon before I cut them because it is possible to transfer the germs from outside to the inside with the knife blade.

Probably people are getting really germophobic these days. A moderate amount of germs are good to help us build up immunity.

No, I never wash durian skin.

How about you, do you wash banana too before you peel its skin of?

I’m like yourself and don’t wash the banana skin but do if its fruit that I am going to cut.

I think too many people are getting paranoid about all these ‘germs’. You are probably more likely to get far worse germs from touching your lips after doing normal things like handling money or typing on a keyboard.

Besides, isn’t it good to get ‘some’ germs? To help strengthen immune system?

a banana, I don’t wash, but usually I wash the vegetables, before I peel them off, to make a salad (e.g. a cucumber).

I also wash the lemons/oranges/grapefruits, before I use them, even that I want only their juice.

Nope, not bananas. I’ve never heard of that… I guess if I were to eat the banana peel I’d wash it… but that doesn’t sound too appetizing.

    Wash a banana peel?

Not usually, but I do inspect the banana very carefully to be sure that there isn’t some nasty tropical spider still lurking there.

It’s my first time heard about it. Never wash the banana before peeling it.

Sometimes I wash the peel and if I don’t then I just hold the skin on the bottom while I eat it.
