I know most of you have seen this video before. Pardon me. I just watched it lately and I was deeply amazed by it. Look at the gush of Coke once Mentos are dropped into the 2-little bottle of Diet Coke.
How can this happen? Here you go for the scientific explanation:
“In a normal case, water resists the expansion of bubbles in the soda . Water molecules attract each other strongly, and they link together to form a tight mesh around each bubble. It takes energy to push water molecules away from each other to form a new bubble. The phenomenon is called “surface tension”. When we drop the mentos into the soda, the gelatin and gum arabic from the dissolving candy disrupts the water mesh, so it takes less work to expand bubbles.” Source
For those who want to try this trick at home, use mint type Mentos.
If you have seen your mum cooking potatoes in a pot of boiling water, then you probably will have a better understanding what actually has taken place. Put a scoop of ice cream into root beer and you will see the same thing too.
So, if you put Mentos into your mouth or swallow it into your stomach followed by a bottle of Coke, what will happen?
No worry, what you see in the video will not happen in our bodies. Why?
Because I have tried it and I am still alive kicking.
Get some soda and Mentos for some fun!
