For those who are too busy to go to gym frequently, those who do not have motivation for a strict exercise regimen, those who want to improve blood circulation and want to feel younger, sex may be your answer. Many have written about how sex can help ease joint and muscle pain, stimulates the immune system, reduce depression, lengthen life span, prevent insomnia and also decreasing risk of breast cancer, but let’s look at it purely as a workout this time.
Yes, treat sex as a workout next time when you do it.
- Sex can really help burn fat. How much calorie burn depends on the duration (1 minute or 30 minutes), body weight (yours and your partner), position (standing, sitting, lying, running or flying) and vigor of the activity. From the stage of the having the appetizer (kissing, undressing and the other foreplay using hands and mouths) to the main course (inter-course I mean) and finally to the dessert (hugging and massaging), you burn calorie in each of them. As a rule of thumb, a vigorous sex burns some 200 calories, about the same as running 15 minutes on a treadmill. The pulse rate, in a person aroused, rises from about 70 beats per minute to 150, the same as that of an athlete. But, you do not burn much calories if you are on bottom the whole time.
- Just like other physical activity, you can have lots of fun in the process and not even have to leave the comfort of your bedroom to do it (though some prefer living room, kitchen, garden or even cinema or lift).
- Muscular contractions during intercourse work the pelvis, thighs, buttocks, arms, neck and abs. Sometimes, your arms or legs do not only have to sustain your own body weight, but your partner too, if you get what I mean.
- Love making also boosts production of testosterone, which leads to stronger bones and muscles. If I were to choose what is the greatest exercise equipment ever created, not barbell, not smith machine or medicine ball, but bed.
So, can we really consider sex as a workout? I do not think we can exactly substitute a 10-minute sexercise with two-kilometer run or using a 2-minute of Kamasutra style 11th to replace 3 sets of bench press.
In short, for some people, making love is a great exercise. It uses most of the muscle groups and can help to burn off the calories as part of an effective physical fitness program. However, just make sure sex is not the primary source of physical activity. Otherwise, we will see sexercise as one of the sports in Olympic 2008.
