Is It Safe for Pregnant Woman to Walk Through Metal Detector at Airport?

When my wife was pregnant, she traveled once together with me to overseas.  We have a concern, wondering whether it was safe for my wife to walk through the metal detector at the boarding gate.  We worried that the detector would emit radiation which might pose risk to our unborn child.

So, I did some fact finding and realized that the metal detector does not emit X-ray.  Therefore, it is safe to pass through it.  The metal detector does generate low-frequency electromagnetic field, but its level is very low and not enough to pose any risk to anyone, including pregnant women.

In case the detector makes the beeping sound, the security officer may use the wand to check on you.  Do not worry because the wand emits low level of electromagnetic too.

The machine which emits X-ray is the one which scan your luggage. This machine is very well shielded. So, it is your bags, your shoes, your laptop and your shampoo go through the x-rays, and not you.  You would have to place your hand (or yourself) through the curtain of the luggage screening machine to be exposed to significant levels of radiation.

If you still have safety concerns of being scanned, I advise you to get a letter from your gynae stating that you are pregnant.  You can then request for a physical pat-down search by a female security instead.
