Confessions of a Ex-Smoker: How I Quit Smoking with Exercise

posted on June 12th, 2010 ·

This is a good guest post, written by one of readers, Donna Moore, on how she managed to quit smoking after years of struggle.

If you are currently a smoker, and you were anything like me ten years ago before I quit, you may scoff at the idea of exercising. I smoked about two packs a day during my smoking heyday, and I’d laugh at anyone who was attempting to stay fit, especially since I hardly ever engaged in physical activity, and kept unhealthily slim mostly because I was malnourished as a result of nicotine appetite suppression. Eventually my inability to maintain a healthy weight had become serious, and I also developed severe kidney problems at a very young age. My doctor suspected that smoking was, at least partially, to blame. Long story short, after all of that, I decided that I really had to quit. (more…)

Based on comments left in my blog in different posts and also e-mails, here are the list of what people hate most most in their gym:

  1. I hate that my gym does not have enough parking space.

Do You Use Special Detergent For Your Exercise Clothes?

posted on June 6th, 2010 ·

After exercising, it is normal that our clothes stink, especially after it is soaking wet with sweat. Also, if the wet towels or socks are kept in the gym bag for too long, they smell really bad after a long day. So, it is always good to wash them immediately.

However, I do not really do that. I normally do my laundry during weekends and I always wash the workout clothes together with my other clothes. Those fully cotton shirts are normally still smell good after the wash. However, sometimes, polyester made shirts or pants like Nike Dri-Fit, Under Armour or CoolMax have that weird musty smell after the wash. I have to hang them under hot sun, then only that smell will go away. I am not sure that is only me or others have the same experience. (more…)

Back Workout (7) – Horizontal Pull-Up

posted on June 3rd, 2010 ·

Pull-ups or chin-ups are fantastic workout for upper-body strength and development. Recently, I have tried this new variation of this exercise – horizontal pull-up. It is actually a combination of a row and a pullup. You may think that this workout is very simple. It is deceiving because it is quite difficult to do it right even it is just a body weight workout. The key differentiator of horizontal and vertical pull up is that the former requires you to keep your abs and lower-back muscles very tight as you pull with lats, biceps, and forearms. (more…)

Australia Is The Fattest Nation In The World Overtaking America

posted on May 30th, 2010 ·

When I read the headline saying Australia has become the fattest nation in the world, I was puzzled. I always had the impression that US had the most super-sized people. I later realized that the report, which was prepared by Melbourne’s Baker IDI Heart and Diabetes Institute, made the conclusion based on the percentage of the population. The latest figure shows that 4 million Australians or 26% of the adult population are obese whereas US has about 25%. A further 5 million Australians are considered overweight. (more…)
