How Does Higher Petrol Price Help You In Losing More Weight?

posted on June 5th, 2008 ·

Ever since year 2005, petrol price has been going up and it has gone even worse lately. I just came across an interesting finding from a study – the increase of gas prices are actually helping people to lose weight. A doctoral student in health economics at the University of Washington found out that rising fuel costs are forcing American to drive less, eat at home more and eventually slimming down.

The student, Charles Courtemanche, called it a “silver lining” to this global fuel price problem which is getting worse for the past couple of years. He found that every US$1 rise in gas prices has reduced obesity by about 15 percent after 5 years. He even estimated that this trend could save 16,000 lives and help US government to save as much as US$17 billion in health bills each year. The report shows that between 1979 and 2004 which the pump prices are affordable, obesity has risen about 13 percent during that period. Obesity, which is defined as having a body mass index more than 30, has been considered to factor in as many as 112,000 deaths annually.

Do Not Watch This Anti Smoking Advertisement Alone!

posted on June 3rd, 2008 ·

In Malaysia, government has spent about RM100 million of taxpayers’ money for the quit smoking campaign (code name as Tak Nak in Malay language which means Don’t Want) two years ago. Unfortunately, based on the latest findings, Health Minister has realized that the anti-smoking campaign has failed miserably – there was no indication that the number of smokers had gone down.

I believe that the message is not strong enough. May be the poster designers (heard was done by Limkokwing University of Creative Technology) or the authority was just too conservative in this campaign. Look at the poster – smoking causes black and yellow teeth? Though smoking does really cause that, public would not care about it and most of us have just ignored it. In order to ensure something that goes into people’s mind and be there for longer period with huge impact, anti smoking posters probably need to send an extreme message.

Other countries are more aggressive in anti smoking campaign. Came across tobacco warning cigarette packs in Australia from the Internet. The authority there has really made a bold move to get its citizen to quit smoking. I lost my appetite immediately after seeing the following pictures. They are gross.

How Much Salt Should You Eat and How To Reduce Salt Intake?

posted on May 27th, 2008 ·

Do you like eating salty food, especially crispy potato chips? If you are, read on.

The UK government recommends a maximum of:

  • 6 gram of salt for adults
  • 5 gram a day for children aged 7 to 10
  • 3 gram for children aged 4 to 6 daily.

However, we have taken more than enough salt from the processed food we eat everyday, especially if we eat out. For example, a family of four sharing a Pizza Hut meal deal – consisting of one Cheesy Bites Meat Feast, one medium Super Supreme, a portion of garlic bread, a portion of potato wedges, chicken wings, and a cheesecake dessert – each could end up eating 12.3 gram of salt. In this case, the amount of salt consumed in one meal is more than twice the daily limit for an adult and four times the daily limit of a six year old.
