Running Beside Someone In Gym May Make You Exercise Harder

Imagine you walk into a gym, you see five treadmills arranged next to each other and only one person is using one of them. Now, will you use the treadmill right next to the person or will you choose other which is few machine away?

I bet that you will go for the latter.

However, I recommend you to use the machine, be it treadmill, stationary bike or elliptical trainer, next right to someone.

Why?

Some days, you are not very motivated to push yourself. Going to the gym is just another routine activity. So, working out next to a person who is working hard may give you a little boost. Use his passion to drive yourself up. Even if that person is exercising at slower intensity, you will still feel good if you do it slightly harder than him. This little trick has worked well for me. I always tell myself, I need to run longer than him before I stop.

No harm. Give this little game a try. If you are lucky, exercising next to a sexy babe or good looking hunk will give you an unexpected encounter.  Good luck!

Oh boy… I’m first to comment! :-D Yes indeed true I work much harder whenever someone is working beside me. Especially when a personal trainer is training the person beside me! I’d experienced this several times, with a personal trainer beside talking/explaining things to someone beside me, I feel I must ‘behave’ myself like “Go! Go! Faster, harder, don’t stop, increase the speed/intensity otherwise the PT beside you will think you aren’t working hard enough.”

    LOL!!

We were just talking about this yesterday during lunch. :-)

My colleague was running on a treadmill next to this guy and he kept running faster and he started to push harder too. Call it kiasu but it’s a “fun” game.

For me, if I have a friend to jog/run/cycle with, it’s ok.

Yes you’re right. Sometimes you get intimidated when your performance is worse than the person beside you. You might what be guessing what the person beside you thinks. Psychology is so scary!!

For motivation to workout, you can always join a group exercise class:)

Maybe I’m a little competitive. I’ll choose the machine next to someone without even thinking.

I know what you mean Mun. If someone starts going faster than me on the treadmill something inside me tells me I need to start going faster than them. It’s like the game of chicken on a treadmill :-)

So now I know… sometimes I do wonder why someone come and run at the machine next to me when there’re obviously lots of empty machines elsewhere. And some are kiasu and kept looking at my exercise meter. For me, I prefer to run on my own instead of next to someone. But that’s just me.
