You may have come this question bothering you for some time – Should I do crunches before or after your cardiovascular exercise? How about on the day you are doing weight lifting?
For me, if I were to only cardiovascular exercise on that day, I will work out my abs before or after I do my cardio. Cardiovascular exercises on elliptical trainer, stationary bike or treadmill do not really use much abdominal muscles, therefore, I never have much issue in doing it before or after, but seldom will I do crunches twice, both before and after cardio.
On days when I do weight lifting, I normally add crunches into the middle of my weight lifting routine. I seldom do at the first exercise because I rather use the energy for the hardcore compound workouts such as squat, deadlift, pull-up, bench press and others. I try not do abs workout as the last exercise because by the time I finish my weight lifting, I am normally too fatigued to do the exercise correctly. Yes, I rather not to do crunches if I fail to do it with proper form. Quality is more important than quantity.
I also know of people who prefer do sit-ups or crunches in the morning or even before they go to sleep at night time. So, listen to your body and let the result be the best way to decide whether you chose of time is good or bad.
After all, we all are different, if you like Ryan Reynolds who believes sit-ups before the weight lifting workout routine will fire you up, by all means, do it!
