When The Best Time To Eat Fruit, Before or After Meal?

January 22nd, 2012 · 2 Comments ·

One school of thought believes that you should eat fruit on empty stomach and before meal based on these few reasons:

  • Fruit contains simple sugar which supposedly does not require digestion and this sugar will not stay long in the stomach. Foods rich in protein or fat will stay in the stomach for a longer period because they require more digestion. If you eat fruit right after eating those foods, the fruit sugar will stay together with those foods in stomach. It ferments and turns to acid. It produces gas. Therefore, you burp when you eat watermelon after meal. Your stomach bloats up if you eat durian after meal.
  • Fruit has lower calories but high in fiber and water content. You feel full which makes you eat less during meal.

The other school of people believe that fruits can be eaten before, during or after meal. What is important is that one should not overeat. The burping is not caused by the so called fermentation, but the overeating.

Now, who is right or wrong?

If I look at my Muslim friends, during fasting month (Ramadan), when they break fast in the late evening, they normally do it with dates which is a fruit. While I do not know the exact reason, I believe that eating fruits before meals have been practiced by certain groups of people for ages.

As for myself, I normally eat it after meal, though occasionally, on empty stomach an hour before meal. I will get bloated if I overeat, not because I eat it before or after, but that is me. One thing for sure, if I eat it before meal, I tend to eat less food during my meal. So, for people who want to lose weight, eating fruit before meals may help.  As for others, eat whenever you like.

How about you, do you eat fruit before or after meal?

    hey mun,

been following your blog for years

since im a Muslim, just wanted to add something, regarding eating dates for our break fast, apart from being told by our Prophet, scientifically it has been proven that dates provides the following nutrients such as glucose and fructose it also contains minerals like magnesium, potassium and calcium.

Egyptian scientist also have proved that by eating dates we keep our body warm, stimulates the brain and body, helps child growth, enhance blood circulation, prevent cancer, good for kidneys and liver, and it help to reduce bleeding during giving birth.

Put it in a simple words, dates are easily digested by our stomach, it gives quick recovery and long-term influence for the body system.
