This is a really good post! I've got a little variation on it!

I work with an Older Lady (prob 35-40ish). Who is currently drinking shakes and is a member of a diet club to loose weight. She see's it as quick and easy, believing that she has a problem with food and thats why she's the size she is, by taking food out of the mix. She can't be tempted. Also the results are quick.

I was talking to her about creating a lifestyle that suits you. Like I can afford time to go to the gym 5 times a week, I like my classes and I make sure that i'm consuming fruits and protein etc. She told me that I "need to get a life" she's not a mean lady, she meant it as a joke. I pointed out that it IS my life and it's really sociable. I see my friends when I go to the gym, have a laugh, joke about and burn some pent up energy. The exercise makes me feel better during the day and I don't get stressed out as much. I can go to an all you can eat restaurant and eat as much as I want, if I wanted as my life style can handle it. I can go round to a friends house a have a bottle of wine with them AND (most importantly to me) I can eat real food!

I don't know if she understood what I was trying to say. As she was adamant that her £30p/w drinks were working (I pay £36 p/m for my gym >_<) Everyone has their pay offs. If they think it is hard work, people naturally don't want to do anything. What they don't understand is that once you start doing it and doing it properly. It's really not that hard to keep going!

I've been working out on and off for about 5 years now, the lapses are caused by injuries in sports and all and the latest lapse was caused by my hectic work schedule when i got back here to Malaysia. Long working hours and boss & peer pressure became the root cause of me quitting for about a year. Doing exactly what you have posted about, drinking + smoking whereby my monthly bills will be ringing in at about rm 600-800.

Since last december i've quit smoking and signed back up with a local gym and have been working out 4-5 times a week and I feel better than never before. Body fat % has gone back down to 14% or so and i've recovered my stamina back again. Best thing is i'm spending RM 100+ a month for a better lifestyle. I still do drink but I do it sparingly, about 3-4 times a month.

Don't go down the road of no return with all the unhealthy lifestyle, get a balance and you'll be feeling much better about yourself.

Cheers Mun for postin this up, the general masses has got a very skewed perception of the high cost for going to the gym.

You are right Mun, different people have different priorities. Unfortunately, almost everyone I know place these "unhealthy" habits as their priorities. They do not see exercising or gym membership are actually inexpensive ways to stay healthy in the long term. Sigh ... it's sad to see people I care still smoking n boozing around ... By the way, I went for a body analysis checkup today. Everything is at healthy level ... Am happy! The 3-4 years of exercising and healthy eating habits really paid off!
