How Often Should You Exercise Your Abs?

One day when you are busy doing crunches, suddenly, a person trainer comes to you and tell you, “Bro, I saw you doing crunches yesterday. Today, you are doing it again” Now, you are puzzled.

When comes to how often we should exercise our abs, 2 schools of thought:

1) Those Who Think You Should Not Train Abs Consecutive Days
They believe that abdominals can be over trained just like any other muscle groups. Muscle tissue is actually broken down or torn during training. So, it needs adequate rest. When your abs are trained too frequently, the recovery process is shortchanged, resulting in diminished muscular development. Normally, muscles need at least 48 hours in order to repair themselves and become stronger.

Also, when you do compound workouts such as squat, deadlift, lat pull downs, and others, your abdominal muscles also come into play as stabilizers.

Therefore, considering the above 2 points, you do not really train your abs daily. A maximum 2 to 3 non-consecutive days a week is sufficient.


2) Those Who Think You Should Train Your Abs Daily
You rarely fatigue the abdominal muscles hard enough. Many are doing abs exercise with limited range of motion. So, it may be useful to some type of abdominal strengthening exercise on a daily basis to counteract the excessive tightening of your lower back muscles and hip flexors.

Some people are not doing abdominals regularly because of the fear that these muscles will get too big. However, the abdominals are small muscles compared to other muscles, such as the deltoids, gluteals, hamstrings, biceps, and quadriceps. So, unless you are progressively overloading these muscles with additional external resistance, such as ab machines, it is unlikely that the abs will become “too thick” or “too huge”.

Also, according to Bruce Lee’s wife, Linda Lee Cadwell, Bruce Lee actually did abs exercise daily. He did sit-ups, crunches, leg raises and other abs exercise everyday without fail.


What Mun Thinks
As usual, seldom I will jump the gun to draw a clear line. How often and how long should you train your abs depends on how fast the muscles can recover. If you have sore abs muscle after you do crunches on Monday, do not do anymore crunches then on Tuesday. If the thing is back to normal on Wednesday, go ahead and crunch again.

I myself have sore abs muscles for more than 3 days after I trained them real hard on a day. I have also done do light abs exercise on consecutive days because I feel the urge to do so. You have to listen to your body. It will tell when it is time to train them again.

In fact, you can do 1,000 sit-ups or crunches every day, but if you do not watch your diet and not doing cardiovascular exercise, the fat will probably still remain on the abs. The chances of you having 6-pack is pretty slim then.
