How To Quit Smoking with Ruyan Electronic Cigarette?

April 24th, 2009 · 6 Comments ·

Many smokers are aware of health issues caused by cigarettes, but many have failed to quit smoking, even with pills, patches or gum. Now, good news is that some one has a new way to help them. Read on to find out more.

A Chinese company, Golden Dragon, has invented the first electronic cigarette, Ruyan. Ruyan feels like a cigarette, looks like one and it can even emit vapor. In other words, it gives smokers a totally “new” smoking experience minus off the health risk.

How Ruyan Works:

  • It is actually a battery powered atomizer which uses a Motorola chip. Low thickness nicotine is pumped into an atomizing cell by a miniature pump.
  • By doing this, you will see fog of nicotine when the smoker inhale.
  • Though no real smoke goes into the lung, this device delivers nicotine to the lungs within 7 to 10 seconds, giving a nicotine buzz almost immediately.
  • The nicotines is contained in cartridge which can be replaced.

Ruyan does not come cheap. It is sold at $208 (about 1,600 yuan) per piece and the cartridge is $4 with about 350 puffs each. In China alone, it has about 400 million smokers. If the company sells this cigarette replacement to 10% of them, the revenue will be 10 figure! In fact, the company has come out with electronic cigar.

Mun’s Comment:

  • These are some of the advantages of Ruyan I could think of:
    • By not burning tobacco and being non-inflammable, Ruyan does not leave an unpleasant smell or smoke. The notorious second hand smoke will not be seen.
    • It is free of tar and other substances which is harmful.
    • When other smokers cannot dine in air-conditioned restaurant, with Ruyan, you can go into any place you want.
  • Having said that, I am not so sure whether this electronic cigarette should be the long term solution for smokers who really want to quit smoking. It is probably healthier, but the nicotine goes into the lung directly. It is replacing smoking habit with another.
  • No doubt, nicotine patches also have nicotine, but Ruyan gets the drug into the brain faster than the absorption. A Beijing based newspaper reported in 2006 that one puff of Ruyan contains 18 mg nicotine compared with 1.2 mg from a typical cigarette. The company has denied that.  It claimed that its product has actually followed the Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) guideline recommended by the WHO.

  • Until a conclusive study has been done, Ruyan remains in a gray area in the war against smoking. While Ruyan is a way to look cool (with the fake smoke), I still believe that smokers should be determined to fix the bad habit, once and for all, by quit smoking totally and not to use any replacement like this.

Hate to sound like a troll but this is probably another money-making fad. I’m really skeptical of the so-called benefits. A cigar by any other name is still a cigar, including the harms associated with it.

Quitting comes from within and I doubt that this is going to be effective – just another gimmick.

“Hate to sound like a troll but this is probably another money-making fad. I’m really skeptical of the so-called benefits”

Nah, not a fad at all. They already have a huge following worldwide, and speaking from first hand experience, they’re unbelievable. I’ve had mine for about a month and I’ve stopped coughing and wheezing, I can smell and taste again, I feel 100% better overall, and my sinuses and allergies have stopped bothering me so much.

“Quitting comes from within and I doubt that this is going to be effective – just another gimmick.”

See above, not a gimmick at all. This article is incorrect in many places. First of all, while Ruyan may have followed the WHO’s recommended NRT guideline, not a single manufacturer or distributor markets these as NRT. They are a healthier alternative to smoking. You can look at Ruyan’s website and find a study done on these, including a toxology report on the cartidges done by a New Zealand doctor. Basically, the findings were they are completely safe. There are trace amounts of a few toxic chemicals, but the amounts are well below the safety level set by the FDA. Most of these chemicals are the result of the flavorings in the cartridge and can be completely avoided by vaping the natural flavor.

Secondly, the article claims, and I realize it was a quote, that each puff contains 18mg of nicotine. The fact of the matter is, I don’t know how much nicotine is in each puff, but I *do* know it’s not 18mg! 10mg of nicotine is enough to kill a child. The lethal dose for an adult is 40-60mg. Given that I puff mine upwards of probably 150 times a day…yeah…no way. Evidence suggests that each puff on a vaporizer is probably between 1/3 and 2/3 of the nicotine you get from a puff on a cigarette. Of course, this is highly dependent on the nicotine content of the liquid you’re using.

Anyway, just wanted to clear that up. :)

P.S. The price is a LOT lower than that. I got the device, 10 refillable cartridges, and a 30ml bottle of liquid for $117.00. I’ve already saved more on cigarettes in one month than I spent on the supplies. If you are a smoker, please give this a try. It *will* change your life. You’ll be amazed how easy it is not to smoke and how much better you feel!

I dont really get the buzz about this particular product. There is a lot more than one brand on the market already…

I tried to quit smoking about 10 times but I just didnt have the willpower to go through with it. Now I have been using the E-Cigarette for about 4 months and I love it. I can slowly reduce the nicotine dose to slowly stop smoking.

Yeah most women definitely keep smoking to stay thin or not gain weight. Just use a E-Cigarette!!!

Once you decide to stop smoking, I recommend you use e-cigar with Champix, kind of medicine that helps quit smoking. The medicine is the strongest measure to treat heavy-smokers. If you use only e-cigar, you may be addicted to it. I live in Korea now. and I predict this could be long-term fad here as well.
